O: People look for God, even for Jesus, in all sorts of strange places, but they often fail to recognize Him when they see Him, just as several people failed to recognize Jesus soon after His resurrection. The average person expects to find Jesus in a church building, the grander the better, but God doesn't inhabit buildings per se. Jesus Himself said that He could be found wherever two or three people are gathered in His name. The problem with our perception of that is that we might be using His name but not be gathering in His name, that is, in agreement with who He is. Many people visit church and fail to encounter Jesus because the members of the church are there for their own reasons, out of habit or social pressure or whatever, rather than seeking God and being open to His Spirit. The other side of that is that people can encounter a group of believers who are genuinely alive in the Spirit and still not find God, simply because what they experience doesn't match their preconceptions. However, prolonged exposure to such a group has a way of shattering preconceptions!

A: I have certainly found Jesus, so my question is how do I introduce Him to others. The purpose of this church is to glorify God by worship, fellowship, and introducing Him to others, so this is no trivial matter. As a church we need to be agreed and focused on this purpose for our existence, which of course means being focused on Jesus Himself, by His Spirit. As pastor, I need to examine all of my activities, first of all, and then all the activities of the church in light of that purpose, and eliminate, modify, and add as necessary to fulfill that purpose.

P: Hallelujah! Father, I certainly didn't expect You to give me a precise, clear, understandable mission statement in my devotions this morning, but that's what You've done. Thank You! Show me now how to get every member of this church on board, with full, enthusiastic participation. I have been reading for years that each organization needs such a statement, and I have been fully convinced, I think, but I haven't been able to see what ours should be. Thank You for the magnificent vision of Omura being again the foremost Christian city in Japan, and thank You now for this clear statement of what we are to be and do to accomplish that vision. May all of Your plans for us be accomplished, on Your schedule and for the salvation of millions, for Your glory. Thank You. Hallelujah!

O: This is one of the more dramatic moments of the NT, if not the whole Bible. It is a caution, an instruction, and an encouragement to all believers who will really think about it. The fact that Peter, who was one of Jesus' closest three and was the functional leader of the 12 apostles, could deny three times that he even knew Jesus helps us understand that none of us is above the temptation to put ourselves – our physical safety or comfort – above loyalty to Christ. This should teach us to be intentional in our obedience, not taking anything for granted but being alert to resist the devil and his schemes. However, in the final analysis this whole incident should be a strong comfort to us, because despite denying Jesus, Peter repented from his heart and as a result was restored fully, with a personal, private visit from the resurrected Christ and with a personal renewal of his commission as Jesus and the disciples were by Lake Galilee.

A: I need all three benefits of Peter's example here. I must not allow myself to get cocky and think I am above falling, but rather walk in humility, trusting God's strength and power to keep me on the path rather than my own. That in turn should make me understanding and gracious toward those who do stumble and fall. At the same time, I am to hold myself and others to the standard of true repentance, not from a legalistic standpoint but knowing that repentance can be evaluated by its fruit. God is indeed the God of second chances, but He sees through our lip service to our hearts, and isn't fooled by mere words.
P: Father, thank You for Peter, and for the Bible. Thank You that, as I tell people frequently, the Bible doesn't “pretty up” anyone, but lets us see them as they were. Thank You for the clear record that You used imperfect people in Your plan for Your glory, because that gives us hope and assurance that You will use us as well. Help me accept myself and others as You accept us, but not use that as an excuse to gloss over sin. Help me hold to Your standards, Your righteousness, holiness and love, in Your strength for Your glory. Thank You. Praise God!

O: Ah, translation! I find myself envying Cathy, who uses the Greek in her devotions whenever the reading is in the NT! There are two major differences between the NIV and the Japanese here. The NIV says “the power of the Lord was present,” where the Japanese says “Jesus used the power of thee Lord.” Also, the NIV says “heal the sick,” referring to the people who were healed, while the Japanese says “healed diseases.” Checking the King James, Amplified, and NASV translations, I find that the word “present” isn't present in the Greek, and it would seem the Greek likewise says “perform healing,” without specifying people or diseases, but I have heard sermons that stressed the very points that are translated differently. That shows how careful we should be to speak what we hear God saying, rather than some intellectual analysis of a Bible passage. In any case, Jesus was “destroying the works of the devil,” as it says in 1 John 3:8, and He was doing it by the power of God. That likewise is our calling and commission, because Jesus said that He was sending us as He was sent (John 20:21). That applies to disease, deception, and everything else the devil does, but it can only be done in the power of God, not our own. Trying to do it in our own power will result in defeat every time, but nothing is too difficult for God.

A: I long to be able to speak and someone be delivered, lay hands on someone and they be healed, but I've got to abide in Christ for it to happen. As He said, apart from Him I can do nothing! However, He also said that those who believe in Him would do even greater things than He did in His earthly ministry. My focus must be on Him, not on the devil and certainly not on myself. Even as I remember that the power is not of me, I've got to have faith that His power is in me to do His will for His glory. I must not draw back out of fear of failure or embarrassment; that would be focusing on myself. Rather, I must be so focused on Christ that He will be completely free to act through me by His Spirit for His glory.

P: Father, thank You for this reminder. Thank You for what You did in my visit to the mental hospital yesterday. I do pray for the full deliverance of those patients, both for their sake and for Your glory. F and M are both aware of exactly when they were demonized, and I have full expectation of their deliverance. T is in a way a harder case, yet he has shown considerable improvement in recent weeks. I pray that ward would be cleared, with everyone delivered, healed, and born again, as a powerful testimony of Your grace and love. Thank You also for being able to pray for A last night, and for the much better understanding of what she is facing. Thank You that she is indeed turning to You alone for her protection, and that You are fulfilling all that You had us pray last night, for Your glory. Thank You. Hallelujah!

O: Two things stand out to me in this verse. The first is that Jesus went to church regularly. It would seem that if anyone wouldn't need to go to church it would be Jesus, but it says that “He went like He always did.” Our responsibility before God is individual, but we need one another to fulfill that responsibility. We are created in the image of God, and He is a relational Being, as came out in the reading just two days ago. Jesus needed times to be alone, but He spent most of His time with His disciples, and corporate worship was His regular custom.
The second thing that stands out to me here is that Jesus not only attended church, He served in it. It was obviously not an unusual thing for Him to be the reader in the service, and He did it in proper form. We go to church for three reasons: because we need to worship God in a corporate setting, because God tells us to honor Him in this way, and because we serve God by serving His people, doing whatever is called for to make the worship service go smoothly.

A: Cathy and I were both raised to be at church every time the doors were open, but there was a period in which we went as little as we could get away with, which was very little indeed. I am not to be condemnatory of those who profess Christ but don't attend, but rather encourage them and work with them on the issues that stand in the way, whether they are personal or corporate. Likewise, I am not to be condemnatory of those who don't participate actively in the worship when they are present, but rather encourage them to give all they know of themselves to all they know of Christ. I need to help each believer understand that they need to participate in the body life of the church as much if not more than the church needs their participation.

P: Father, I come back to the awareness that Your Church is Your people, not buildings or organizations or anything else. I ask for Your wisdom, Your grace and Your love in working with Your people, so that hurts may be healed, bondages cast off, and gifts brought into joyful activity, for Your glory. Thank You. Hallelujah!

O: We have too limited a definition of prophecy. The description of John's calling as given by his father would apply to every evangelist today, indeed, to every believer who engages in evangelism. When Paul speaks of “earnestly desiring to prophesy,” (1 Corinthians 14:1) he is talking of communicating what God is saying to the people around you. We can be assured that something God is continually saying to everyone is “Repent, believe, and be saved.” When we try to do that in our own strength there is little if any fruit, but all that is required is being yielded to the Holy Spirit and praying that He will speak through us. God can and does speak pretty remarkable things through those who are yielded to Him, but the purpose is always to draw the hearers closer to Him, dealing with those things that stand in the way of the fellowship He desires. Often the biggest barriers to that fellowship are the lies that we believe about ourselves, so God speaks encouraging words to help us understand His love and our place in Christ. We cannot save ourselves, much less anyone else, but we can prepare the way for the Lord by giving people the knowledge of salvation, even as it was communicated to us.
A: I am in a position of actively communicating what God has said and is saying, and I certainly have plenty of material! My difficulty is in being sensitive to what God wants said at the particular moment, to the particular hearers. However, my experience has certainly been that if I will be faithful to open my mouth, God will be faithful to fill it with His words. I earnestly desire to encourage the believers to desire, seek, and expect the Lord to speak through them. However, I know from experience that there must be a commitment to obedience before that will be effective. I can't force anyone to make that commitment, but I can encourage those who have once done so to follow through.

P: Father, thank You for those in this body who are indeed following through with their commitment to Christ. I pray for those who have hit roadblocks of various sorts, that they would see those roadblocks for the lies that they are, and move on into all that You desire for them. I pray that we wouldn't settle into a 2-tier body, with those who are pressing on in Christ and those who are dead in the water, so to speak. Help us all catch a glimpse of the glory that You intend for us so that we won't be satisfied with anything less. May we all be Your prophets, Your spokesmen to communicate the good news of Your salvation to all, for Your glory. Thank You. Hallelujah!

O: As was mentioned in a testimony yesterday, joy shared is joy multiplied. We were not created for isolation! Interaction with other people is doubtless one of the biggest sources of complication of all sorts in our lives: frustration, irritation, anxiety, and a lot of other things. However, it is also one of the biggest sources of joy and comfort. It was a major medical breakthrough when they discovered that the simple matter of touch, human to human, was one of the biggest factors in the survival of premature and other physically challenged infants. Those infants who weren't touched did far worse than those who were, and it was a direct, causal relationship. God is a relational Being; hence the Trinity. I was asked just last night why God made man in the first place, and the answer is that He is relational, so He created us for fellowship with Him. This should color every aspect of our lives and serve as the ultimate antidote to self-centeredness. We need others, and they need us!

A: I started out on the same footing as everyone else in this area, but in the course of my childhood I experienced enough rejection and separation of various sorts that I became something of a loner, preferring my private pursuits of the hassle of dealing with others, and that has been a restraining factor in my life ever since. Being married to Cathy for 40 years has helped me a very great deal, not simply because I like to be with her but also to help me understand and operated in interaction with others. However, I still have a lot of room to grow. I must not allow the mechanical factors of my life to edge out the personal: things are never more important than people! I should not resent the demands of interpersonal interaction, but recognize that they are God's prime method of training and preparing me for eternal interaction with Him.

P: Father, thank You for continuing to work on me. I can certainly tell You're not through yet! Thank You for yesterday and all it held. Thank You particularly for how You guided last night's service. I hadn't actually planned on having us lay hands on one another and pray, but it was a natural outgrowth of the teaching and it was definitely of You. Thank You. Help us all in this church be open to and desirous of being channels of Your blessing to one another, including physical contact and certainly including active prayer. I pray particularly for those who were here last night who are struggling with areas of faith. Pour Your grace out on them so that they may understand Your love enough to open up and receive it, though none of us will understand it completely in this life. I pray also for those who have been hurting and hurtful in interpersonal relationships recently, that they would wake up to what is going on and repent, so that this body may become the active demonstration of Your kingdom that You intend, for Your glory. Thank You. Hallelujah!

O: I have never before been struck by the word “behold” in this verse before, and this time it was because the NIV leaves it out, but the Japanese includes it in a very contemporary, colloquial form. What the angel was saying was that this was certainly going to happen, so Mary could confirm it with her own eyes; it wouldn't be a matter of abstract faith for long. God knows our weakness, that we often have to see to believe, and so He frequently gives us clear evidence of things He has told us. However, we have to be willing to see. There is a song that says, “there are none so blind as those who will not see,” referencing Jesus' remarks about the Pharisees in John 9 and elsewhere. For the person of faith, the world is full of evidence of the presence, grace, power and glory of God. For the committed atheist (and there are those), it all seems like blind chance and coincidence. Most people fall somewhere between those two, illustrating the point that if we will choose to look and see, God will reveal Himself to us in more ways than we can imagine.

A: I think I am certainly on the believing end of the spectrum on this issue, but I have room to grow. I don't want to be like Thomas, requiring sight before faith, but I do want to see the abundant evidence that God does provide. A major part of my role as a witness is to share what I've seen so that others may believe as well, and a major part of my role as a pastor is to help the believers see more and more, and share as well. A gifted author can paint word pictures that are very clear, and that is part of the role of believers. We are to talk about the grace and love of God as well as illustrate it with our own lives, so that those around us may be able to see it in and through us.

P: Father, this is a very good, clear point that I should preach. Show me when and how to do so. This is now the second message You've given me recently (the first being on the 19th) that isn't to be preached yet. Help me indeed be faithful to speak Your Word when, where, and how You intend for me to, so that my hearers may have the eyes of their hearts opened to see Your truth indeed. I ask You to keep working on my spiritual visual acuity so that I may see more and more of You, and use me to help others do likewise, for Your glory. Thank You. Praise God!
