S: 申命記 18:18-20 「わたしは彼らの同胞のうちから、彼らのためにあなたのようなひとりの預言者を起こそう。わたしは彼の口にわたしのことばを授けよう。彼は、わたしが命じることをみな、彼らに告げる。わたしの名によって彼が告げるわたしのことばに聞き従わない者があれば、わたしが責任を問う。ただし、わたしが告げようと命じないことを、不遜にわたしの名によって告げたり、あるいは、ほかの神々の名によって告げたりする預言者があるならその預言者は死ななければならない。」
O: This passage has its difficulties in interpretation. On one hand, it has always been taken as messianic, with “a prophet like you” referring to the Messiah. However, it obviously has broader implications as well, because the the Messiah never would (and never did) proclaim anything the Father hadn't spoken to Him. Jesus was/is the absolutely unique Messiah, but God did and continues to speak through various human instruments, for whom the cautions about speaking only what God has told them apply fully. One common point between the Prophet (Christ) and prophets (every other spokesman for God) is that those who hear are responsible for what they have heard. In the NT Age (which includes everything from the birth of Christ through His Second Coming) we have the Holy Spirit to give us discernment as to whether what is said is of God or not. Sometimes we want to sidestep that responsibility, either accepting everything uncritically or rejecting things out of hand, but neither of those courses is acceptable to God.

A: In terms of personal application, I often speak what I feel God is saying, yet I don't consider myself “a prophet.” Be that as it may, I must not take that function lightly. I must be humbly submitted in a proper fear of the Lord (that seems to be coming up a lot recently), applying the words I speak to myself first, and not just speaking them at people. At the same time, responsibility for receiving and acting on what God says is the responsibility of each hearer, not the person through whom God speaks. I am responsible for my own obedience to what God has said and is saying, but not for that of anyone else. As a pastor, it is my desire and task to encourage the believers in their discipleship, but their ultimate responsibility is to God.

As You know better than I do, right now I'm tied in knots over all that is going on, and that's a clear indication of how much I need to grow in both trust and obedience. Help me apply the truth You have been so faithful to speak through me. I come back to Proverbs 3:5-6. Help me indeed trust You with my whole heart and not try to figure everything out on my own. Help me be faithful in the tasks You set for me and leave the outcome in Your hands. Help me remember at all times that I'm not You, and how good it is that's true! Thank You for Your grace toward me, Father, in Christ Jesus my Lord. Amen.

創世記 3:1-15
S: 創世記 3:15 「わたしは、おまえと女の間に、また、おまえの子孫と女の子孫の間に、敵意を置く。彼は、おまえの頭を踏み砕き、おまえは、彼のかかとにかみつく。」
O: This passage is very famous, as is this verse from it, but I recently saw a disturbing distortion of it. A statue of Mary had a snake peeping out from under her robe. This was a distortion, and disturbing, for two reasons. First, the head of the snake was not crushed, and it did not look in the least distressed, and in the second place, this verse does not say the woman would crush the snake's head, it says the “seed of the woman,” singular, and if I'm not mistaken masculine. (I'm not an expert in Hebrew, but both Japanese and English translations specify the gender.) Every Biblical scholar I've read agrees that this verse refers to Jesus Christ; not to mankind in general and to no other specific individual. That is why this passage is included in the readings on Immanuel: it tells why Christ had to come (man's sin) and what He would do (crush Satan). Twisting that to say that Mary defeats Satan (or coexists with him, since that snake wasn't crushed) is subtle but very dangerous heresy.

A: I'm certainly not to mount a campaign against my Catholic brethren, but as the Lord gives opportunity I do need to speak truth to them. The whole issue of Mary is very dangerous, but I'm not to “throw the baby out with the bath water,” as the saying goes, and refuse fellowship because of this point. I have very many dear brothers and sisters in Christ who are Catholic, and I must not go against the prayer of Christ for unity in His body. However, I need to be clear in my teaching so that the believers here will know what and why they believe, and so as many others as possible may be delivered from dangerous error.

I pray that You would open the way for me to bring this issue up with the priests, not to be combative but speaking the truth in love. Thank You for the respect they seem to feel for me. I pray that I would not violate that, but also that I would not value that above the truth. I ask that ask I speak the truth in love so that they would be liberated from deception and would in turn liberate their flocks, so that the works of the devil may be destroyed and the Body of Christ rise up in all purity and strength, for Your glory. Thank You. Praise God!

エペソ 6:1-9
S: エペソ 6:6-8 人のごきげんとりのような、うわべだけの仕え方でなく、キリストのしもべとして、心から神のみこころを行い、人にではなく、神に仕えるように、善意をもって仕えなさい。良いことを行えば、奴隷であっても自由人であっても、それぞれの報いを主から受けることをあなたがたは知っています。
O: A good Christian is the best possible employee. Sad to say, slavery still exists in some parts of the world, and some employment conditions aren't much better than slavery, but this is applicable to all forms of work. Everyone has encountered someone who “butters up” the boss, like Paul talks about in verse 6, but that only works sometimes, and there's no lasting benefit. The point is that all service is to be done as unto the Lord, whoever the immediate beneficiary might be. That's sometimes easier than at other times! It's easy to relate to if our boss is Christ-like, but much harder if he seems to be serving the opposition! The point stands, however, that all good service, given from the heart, is received by God.

A: I have certainly had my times of falling short in this area. Actually it can be particularly difficult when no one is standing over me and I have to be inner-motivated to be conscientious. I tend to put off things like creating and grading quizzes, and my lesson preparation is all too often slap hazard. In such cases, I lose out as much or more than my students do! I need to treat all parts of my life, not just things like devotions and sermon preparation, as serving God, and not slough off on any of it.

Help me get the nursing school quizzes graded and the next quiz created, and guide as I prepare for the ST2 class Christmas party on Thursday. Help me not presume or coast, but be intentional in my preparation, as unto You, so that others may be drawn to You through my service, for Your glory. Thank You. Praise God!

エペソ 5:1-21
S: エペソ 5:15-17 そういうわけですから、賢くない人のようではなく、賢い人のように歩んでいるかどうか、よくよく注意し、機会を十分に生かして用いなさい。悪い時代だからです。ですから、愚かにならないで、主のみこころは何であるかを、よく悟りなさい。
O: Christians should be innocent but not gullible. The devil is a liar and a deceiver and tries to deceive “even the elect,” as Paul says elsewhere. It is almost a truism that most crime is stupid, but the same can be said even more strongly of sin in general. When we understand the consequences of sin and the rewards of obedience, there should be not a moment's hesitation to our obedience. However, most of the time we aren't that smart! We become experts at excuses and rationalizations, rather than at discerning God's will and following it. The OT says that the fear (deep respect, honor) of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom (Proverbs 9:10) and knowledge (Proverbs 1:7). Failure to fear God properly lays us open to all sorts of foolishness and deception. Even for the person who strives to walk in purity, failure to fear God properly can result in all sorts of missed opportunities to serve Him. Time once passed cannot be regained, and the only wise course is to use each moment in line with God's will. That's not to say that we are to be frantic and anxious about filling each moment – sometimes God's plan is for us to be quiet and relax – but it is to say we need to be very careful of distractions.

A: This sure hits close to home! It took me over 50 years to really recognize and acknowledge my own foolishness! Priding myself on my high IQ, I have missed more opportunities and walked into more traps than I could begin to calculate. The irony is that I have experienced, and delighted in, many “divine appointments” along the way. I don't suppose that should surprise me, when God could use even Balaam's donkey! I need to recognize that I am far closer to being a donkey than I am to being God. I need to seek God's wisdom, His will, at every juncture, not making decisions based solely on intellect but submitting my mind to God and letting Him guide me. I have understood this on a surface level for a long time, but living it out has proved to be much more difficult. However, God is gracious, and I am not to get all anxious and tied in knots over this or anything else. Rather, I am to trust His love, just as He told me, and receive the lessons He gives me with gratefulness and joy.

P: Father, that last line is a kicker. Like it says in Hebrews, Your lessons often aren't too pleasant while I'm going through them. O: Christians should be innocent but not gullible. The devil is a liar and a deceiver and tries to deceive “even the elect,” as Paul says elsewhere. It is almost a truism that most crime is stupid, but the same can be said even more strongly of sin in general. When we understand the consequences of sin and the rewards of obedience, there should be not a moment's hesitation to our obedience. However, most of the time we aren't that smart! We become experts at excuses and rationalizations, rather than at discerning God's will and following it. The OT says that the fear (deep respect, honor) of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom (Proverbs 9:10) and knowledge (Proverbs 1:7). Failure to fear God properly lays us open to all sorts of foolishness and deception. Even for the person who strives to walk in purity, failure to fear God properly can result in all sorts of missed opportunities to serve Him. Time once passed cannot be regained, and the only wise course is to use each moment in line with God's will. That's not to say that we are to be frantic and anxious about filling each moment – sometimes God's plan is for us to be quiet and relax – but it is to say we need to be very careful of distractions.

A: This sure hits close to home! It took me over 50 years to really recognize and acknowledge my own foolishness! Priding myself on my high IQ, I have missed more opportunities and walked into more traps than I could begin to calculate. The irony is that I have experienced, and delighted in, many “divine appointments” along the way. I don't suppose that should surprise me, when God could use even Balaam's donkey! I need to recognize that I am far closer to being a donkey than I am to being God. I need to seek God's wisdom, His will, at every juncture, not making decisions based solely on intellect but submitting my mind to God and letting Him guide me. I have understood this on a surface level for a long time, but living it out has proved to be much more difficult. However, God is gracious, and I am not to get all anxious and tied in knots over this or anything else. Rather, I am to trust His love, just as He told me, and receive the lessons He gives me with gratefulness and joy.

エペソ 4:17-32
S: エペソ 4:32 お互いに親切にし、心の優しい人となり、神がキリストにおいてあなたがたを赦してくださったように、互いに赦し合いなさい。
O: Our attitude toward one another boils down to our appreciation of what God has done for us in Christ Jesus. It is impossible to both love God and hate your brother simultaneously, as John says very clearly (1 John 4:20). Failure to love God indicates a failure to understand and appreciate God's love for us, that caused Him to send His Son and through that Son provide redemption, salvation, and all the riches of glory. Thinking back to yesterday's passage, spiritual maturity comes from a growing understanding of God's love and appropriation of all that He has provided in Christ into every area of our lives. It's much like marriage. When I married Cathy over 40 years ago I thought I loved her, and I was quite sincere in that. However, through years of discovering what it is to live love out in hard times as well as easy, when we see eye to eye and when we don't, my love has grown to a depth and level that I could only imagine back then. I had the blessing of growing up with parents who made the hard choices and grew in their love, so from their example I could imagine it and take it as a goal, but for my love to become mature I had to walk it out in every area of my life. In the same way, when we come to Christ our commitment is sincere (or we haven't really come to Him), but there is enormous room to grow. God sees to it that we have many opportunities to grow in that commitment, allowing us to experience all sorts of things we might not choose, but which have the potential of taking us deeper and deeper in our understanding of Him and higher and higher in our joy. One of the chief areas for that is our interaction with the people around us. We will grate on other people and they will grate on us. How we respond to that has a massive impact on our spiritual growth, because closing our hearts to one another closes our hearts to God. What Paul is saying in this verse isn't optional!

A: Once again the Lord has spoken to where I am, and His words are clear. I've got to walk this out and insist on it. The difficulty comes in getting this through to others, because only the Holy Spirit can accomplish that. I've got to be fully submitted and available to Him so that my words and actions will be useful to Him in communicating God's truth in God's love. Sometimes love calls for discipline, just as God disciplines us, but I must be very careful that my words and actions aren't reflections of personal pain, because that will only multiply the pain, as I have certainly seen in many situations. I must not be on a high horse looking down on anyone, but I also must not draw back from exercising the authority God has given me to build people up.

Show me how to stand firm against him, not yielding to him any part of my heart and life nor any part of this church. Thank You for the things You are doing. Help me trust You, even when the next step seems totally dark. May all of Your plans for me and for this church be fulfilled, on Your schedule and for Your glory. Thank You. Hallelujah!

エペソ 4:7-16
S: エペソ 4:12-13 それは、聖徒たちを整えて奉仕の働きをさせ、キリストのからだを建て上げるためであり、ついに、私たちがみな、信仰の一致と神の御子に関する知識の一致とに達し、完全におとなになって、キリストの満ち満ちた身たけにまで達するためです。
O: Spiritual maturity is of absolute, vital importance, and it is the charge of those set into the Body as “five-fold ministers.” (verse 11) The difficulty comes in the immaturity of the ministers themselves, as well as in the immaturity of the saints. It's a constant journey, both for sheep and for shepherds. This whole thing is closely connected. We aren't going to become fully adult, to the full stature of Christ, until the ministers prepare the saints and get them moving in active ministry. In that process, unity of faith and knowledge will be birthed, because the saints will be living out their faith and knowledge and it will become truly part of them. Saints on the sidelines aren't growing! A major difficulty to all of this is our inertia and our ignorance of the gifts God has placed in us. The majority of saints do little if any ministry because either they think they aren't qualified, or they think it's too much work. It is the job of the “five-fold ministers” to educate the saints both in their gifts and in the many opportunities to exercise those gifts. Another difficulty is in emotional immaturity, both in the ministers and in the saints. When we react like little children, pitching fits or going into sulks like 2-year-olds, it benefits no one! This is where it really can get difficult for the minister, because emotional scars going back dozens of years sometimes have to be dealt with, and only the Holy Spirit can do that.

A: I am certainly in the middle of this. I recognize my own lack of full maturity even as I seek to help the saints become mature. As Paul said in 2 Corinthians 2:16, who is equal to such a task? All I can do is walk humbly before my God, depending on the Holy Spirit to say and do the things that are needed, which I certainly couldn't do on my own. I must not run from confrontation when that is called for, but I must always speak the truth in love, and never to inflate myself. By personality I have a strong desire to avoid confrontation, and that has gotten me into trouble as many times as it has kept me from it, I think. I need to see myself as nothing and Christ as everything, so that I will be useful to Him in building His Body by preparing the saints for ministry.

P: Father, thank You for the huge learning opportunity You are giving me. Help me not run from it. This season is very busy, but that is no excuse not to follow through. Guide as I call a church board meeting, that everyone will be able to meet in Your timing. Guide in all that is said in that meeting, that together we would arrive at unity in our obedience to You. I desire Your best for each member of this body and for the body as a whole, and I know You desire it more than I do. Help me submit to You and resist the devil on every front, so that he may flee and we become all that You desire and intend, for Your glory. Thank You. Hallelujah!

O: 霊的成熟は絶対的にとても重要で「五つのつとめ」（１１節）としてキリストの体に組み入れられための責任です。聖徒の未成熟とミニストリー事態の未成熟から困難が生じます。羊にとっても羊飼いにとっても常に旅です。全てのことは密接に繋がっているのですから。私たちはキリストの体のために完全な大人になることはできません。それができるのは聖徒のためにミニストリーが整えられ、実際の行動が起こされてからです。この過程で、信仰と知識の一致が生まれます。なぜなら聖徒は信仰と知識のうちに住み、それが真実、組み込まれるからです。傍観的な聖徒は成長しません！最大の問題は私たちの持つ惰性であり、神様が下さった賜物を知らないでいることにあります。聖徒の殆どは、ミニストリーの働きに自分たちは価しないか、あるいは過度の奉仕であると考えてしまい、ミニストリーを殆ど行いません。聖徒を賜物と、それらを活かす機会の両方を教えられるのは「五つのつとめ」です。それ以外にも、奉仕、聖徒の面での情緒的な未成熟が挙げられます。幼子のように反応すると、癇癪を起したり、２歳児のようにむくれてしまいます。それでは誰のためにもなりません！これが奉仕する際の厄介なことです。はるか過去に戻り、受けた傷と向き合わねばならないからです。しかし、それができるのは聖霊様だけなのです。
A: I am certainly in the middle of this. I recognize my own lack of full maturity even as I seek to help the saints become mature. As Paul said in 2 Corinthians 2:16, who is equal to such a task? All I can do is walk humbly before my God, depending on the Holy Spirit to say and do the things that are needed, which I certainly couldn't do on my own. I must not run from confrontation when that is called for, but I must always speak the truth in love, and never to inflate myself. By personality I have a strong desire to avoid confrontation, and that has gotten me into trouble as many times as it has kept me from it, I think. I need to see myself as nothing and Christ as everything, so that I will be useful to Him in building His Body by preparing the saints for ministry.

P: Father, thank You for the huge learning opportunity You are giving me. Help me not run from it. This season is very busy, but that is no excuse not to follow through. Guide as I call a church board meeting, that everyone will be able to meet in Your timing. Guide in all that is said in that meeting, that together we would arrive at unity in our obedience to You. I desire Your best for each member of this body and for the body as a whole, and I know You desire it more than I do. Help me submit to You and resist the devil on every front, so that he may flee and we become all that You desire and intend, for Your glory. Thank You. Hallelujah!

エペソ 4:1-6
S: エペソ 4:2-3 謙遜と柔和の限りを尽くし、寛容を示し、愛をもって互いに忍び合い、平和のきずなで結ばれて御霊の一致を熱心に保ちなさい。
O: Paul certainly said a mouthful here! This is a command, but the way he piles one word on another makes it very clear that it isn't going to be easy. Reading through the NT it is very clear that interpersonal relationships were often a problem. As I expressed at my friend's ordination a couple of months ago, church would be a lot easier if it didn't have any people in it! However, the Church is people, not buildings. Christ died for people, not programs and equipment. It should come as no surprise that the devil targets unity, between husband and wife, in families, in churches, and among nations. He hates it, because he rejected it in his desire for personal power and glory. Those who follow Christ must likewise follow His example, and that includes how Paul articulates it in this passage. We are to go to the limits of humility and gentleness with each other, demonstrating patience toward one another, and quite simply enduring one another in love. That requires a lot of effort, and a cold heart can't do it. However, the Holy Spirit is at work in and among us, and He's the one who can pull it off, bringing His peace and not some counterfeit.

A: Wow. Talk about hard-hitting and to the point! I need to let this sink into the depths of my being and put it into practice, rather than just paying it lip service. I cannot point any fingers at others for disunity if I'm not willing to go all the way for unity myself. It is clear that I don't have the wisdom or skill to generate unity on my own; I've got to depend on the Holy Spirit. In our woundedness we value what we see as self-defense more than we value unity. I need to address people's wounds, but at the same time point them to Christ, lovingly refusing to let them wallow in self-centeredness and self pity.

Help me rely on You and find my peace and joy in You, whatever is going on around me. Thank You for every circumstance that drives me to You, that takes me to my knees in believing prayer. Thank You that Your plans for me and for this church are glorious, and that You will bring them to pass. Hallelujah!
