箴言 17:22 陽気な心は健康を良くし、陰気な心は骨を枯らす。

This is a justly famous verse precisely because it is so true and so verifiable in experience. Everyone has tasted one side or the other, and generally both at different times, and scientific and medical research continues to confirm it's validity. Patient attitude has an enormous impact on treatment outcome. Put a different way, what matters is not so much what happens to us as our response to it. Jesus addressed this directly in John 16:33 when He said we would have trouble as long as we were on this earth, but we were to rejoice anyway. When our eyes are fixed on God, trusting His final outcome, then all the difficulties fall into perspective and we can have peace and joy. The devil hates that, and he does all he can to get us to focus on the problems themselves and play “what if” scenarios over and over in our minds. When he is successful, we do his work for him by tearing ourselves down, physically and emotionally and spiritually.

この句が有名なのは、まさに真実で、経験から証明できるからです。誰しもこの一面、あるいは両面とも、一般にはその両方を違った時に経験しているでしょうし、科学的、医学的研究が証明するために続けられています。患者の心のあり方は治療の結果に大きく影響をします。違った表現をするならば、問題となるのは何が起こったかということよりも、むしろどう反応するかにかかっています。イエスがヨハネ１６：３３でこのことに直接触れ、この世にいる限り艱難が多いが、喜んでいられると述べています。神に目を向け、神の最終的な結果を信頼するならば、全ての困難は見えなくなり、平安と喜びを持てるのです。このことを嫌う悪魔は問題に目を向けさえようとし、「もし・・・だったら？」の発想に陥れようとします。悪魔に成功させてしまえば、悪魔が有利になるように動いてしまい、私たち自身が肉体的、感情的、霊的に崩れてしまいます。

I have experienced both trusting God and listening to the devil, and there is no question which is better! However, I am painfully aware of how easy it is to fall into the devil's traps. As a pastor, I am continually urging people to lift their eyes to Jesus, but all too often that comes across as being uncaring. I've got to work on hearing people out without letting them wallow in the devil's lies. That can be a difficult balance! I must not make light of difficulties, but I must always present Christ as bigger and more powerful than any difficulty. We have the assurance that the Holy Spirit in us is greater than the devil (1 John 4:4), and God is by definition infinite, but we can have great difficulty hanging onto that emotionally. I must have understanding and sympathy toward that difficulty without yielding to it, either in myself or in those to whom I minister.

神を信頼することと、悪魔に耳を貸すことの両方を私は経験していますが、どちらがよいかは自明の理でしょう。しかし、悪魔の罠にいかに簡単に陥るかを、良く分かっています。人々に常にイエスに目を向けるように教えていくのが、牧師としての私の務めですが、あまりにもしばしば気にかけないでいます。悪魔の嘘に陥らせないようにしながら、人々の話を聞いていきたいと思っています。これはバランスを取るのが難しい仕事です。困難にばかり照準を合わせず、どんな困難よりもキリストが偉大で力ある方であることを、いつも示していきます。私たちの内におられる聖霊様が悪魔よりも偉大であり（１ヨハネ４：４）、神の無限性を確信していますが、気持ちの上で、そう信じ続けるのは大変なことです。こうした困難さを理解し、共感を示しながら、私自身に、またミニストリーをする人にも、屈することなく続けていきます。

Father, this subject has come up a lot in recent days, and I have bemoaned those who have been unhappy with me for continuing to urge them to look to Jesus. Help me operate with Your compassion, not condemning them but lifting their heads gently so that they will be able to see You. There are many things going on around us all the time, some depressing or distressing and some delighting or exciting. Help me choose to look at the good and give You praise and glory, and help me help others to do the same, with all gentleness and love, so that the devil's schemes may be defeated and we may take back all he has stolen from us, for Your glory.
