申命記 11:2, 7 きょう、知りなさい。私が語るのは、あなたがたの子どもたちにではない。彼らはあなたがたの神、主の訓練、主の偉大さ、その力強い御手、伸べられた腕、そのしるしとみわざを経験も、目撃もしなかった。これら主がなされた偉大なみわざのすべてをその目で見たのは、あなたがたである。

Hearsay is all well and good, but nothing can beat personal experience. Hearsay evidence is not admissible in a court of law, and it's not much of a foundation for faith, either. Moses' big concern was that the generation that had seen what he had experienced of God was about to die, just as he was, and he wanted to do all he could to ensure the transmittal of faith to the next generation. They in turn experienced the crossing of the Jordan, the conquest of Jericho, and many other things, but Moses could only trust that such things would happen. The experiences of past generations are important, encouraging and inspiring, but we need to look for and recognize God's hand in our own lives. If our attitude is simply one of enduring, we will recognize little if any of what God is doing, except perhaps in retrospect. If our hearts are open and expectant toward God, we will see Him working in even the smallest details of our lives, and our faith will grow accordingly. We need to share such things with those who have ears to listen, so that they too will be encouraged to expect God to work in their lives.

口伝えは良いものですが、個人的な経験に勝るものはありません。伝聞証拠は法的根拠として認められませんし、信仰の基本ともなりません。モーセは神を経験し、人もそれを見たのですが、モーセがそうであったように、時を経て薄れてしまうことをモーセはひどく心配していました。それで信仰が次世代にうまく伝わるようにしておきたかったのです。彼らはヨルダン川を渡り、エリコを征服し、他にも多くを成しました。モーゼにできたのは、ただ事が成されるように信頼することだけでした。過去の世代が経験したことは重要です。勇気づけられ、励まされます。しかし、それよりも私たちに働いておられる神の御手を求め、知るべきです。もし私たちがただ耐えるだけの態度であるならば、神様の働きを知ることは殆どないでしょう。恐らく過去を振り返って、気付くことはあるかもしれませんが。神様に心を開き、期待するなら、私たちの日々のささいなことにさえ、神様がはたらいてくださっているのを知るでしょう。そして信仰もそれに伴いながら成長できます。聞く耳を持つ人とそうしたことを分かち合いましょう。彼らも神様の働きかけに期待できるように、励まされることでしょう。

This is a big issue with me. We have testimony time in every church service for precisely this reason. When people's hearts are closed, they often hear such testimonies as bragging. My desire and my task is to help them see God's hand in their own lives and know that He loves them just as much as He loves anyone else. Such recognition is giving God the glory He deserves. It is particularly important for parents to speak of such things in front of their children, whether or not they are speaking directly to their children, because if that happens, the children will grow up with the awareness of God who cares about and cares for them, and a vital, personal relationship with Christ will come easily. I must encourage all the parents in the church to do this with their children.

これは私にとって大きな問題です。どの教会でも証しの時を持ちますが、これはまさしく、上に書いたことがその理由です。人が心を閉ざすと、証しを聞いても単に自慢にしか聞こえません。彼らの暮らしに働いておられる神の御手を知らせ、神が等しく彼らを愛しておられることを知ってもらうのが、私の望みであり仕事です。人がこの事実を知ることこそ、神様にご栄光を帰すことができるのです。そして神様は、そのご栄光に相応しいお方なのです。ですから、親は子供の前で、このことを口にしましょう。とても大切なことだからです。たとえ相手が我が子でなくとも、そうしましょう。そうすれば、子供は成長した時、気にかけてくださる神様に気づきます。キリストとの重要な個人的関係がたやすく築けることでしょう。教会内のすべての親である人に、子供に神様の素晴らしさを教えるように、私は勧めていきたいと思っています。

Father, I've not been terribly good about living out the truth I've known. Forgive me. Help me indeed to live out the Word You've planted in me, giving You glory by my testimony and my obedience, so that all Your plans for me may be fulfilled as You desire and intend. Thank You. Hallelujah!

お父様。真実を知っていても、全うした生き方をできないでいます。赦して下さい。私に計画くださった御言葉にそった生き方ができるように助けてください。私は証しをします。従います。あなたにご栄光を帰せるためにです。あなたが私に計画くださったことが、御心のままに成就しますように。感謝します。ハレルヤ！
