The message of repentance, with accompanying acceptance of responsibility for sins, is both vitally important and very difficult for most people to accept. The first line of this passage, “Why should any living person complain?” is taken as a slap in the face by many, because they think they have every right to complain. It is only when we follow through with the rest of this passage, examining our ways and confessing our rebellion to God, that real healing and restoration can take place. God delights to forgive, but He calls for repentance, and we must not forget that.

I constantly encounter people who are hung up on this point, but I have no high moral ground from which to look down on them, because I have done plenty of complaining myself. I think I do better than many, but that's not the point; I shouldn't complain at all, even within myself. Jeremiah, who wrote Lamentations, didn't hesitate to complain, but he was honest about it and addressed his complaints to God, creating dialog that strengthened Jeremiah and countless generations of believers since. I have that record, and I also have the far better record of Jesus, who endured even more than Jeremiah but didn't rebel. I also have the negative example of people who have put themselves in mental hospitals and jails by refusing to take responsibility for their actions. I need to proclaim the message of repentance in all purity, power and love, gently but without apology, so that people may be set free from the deceptive traps of the devil.

Father, this is a constant struggle, which shouldn't surprise me when I consider the human condition. Help me be gentle but firm, with myself and with others, acknowledging suffering but not complaining. I do so much complaining, now that I think about it! I ask You to forgive me and help me walk as an example for the flock, so that they too may be led out of the dead-end trap of complaining and into the wide open blessings of repentance and forgiveness, for Your glory. Thank You. Praise God!
