O: I think this verse is another case of the NIV getting the feel of the meaning better than the Japanese. The Japanese has “the trial to come,” where the NIV has “the judgment to come” I'm sure either is quite defensible, but in the context of talking about “righteousness and self-control,” the probability seems high that Paul was talking about eternal judgment rather than just his own trial. Felix was being typically, humanly foolish. We don't like to acknowledge our personal responsibility before God, and that was exactly what Paul was talking about. He was clear enough about it that Felix got scared, but rather than repenting of his sin before God and accepting salvation, he tried to make the whole issue go away by ignoring it. That response is very common even today! For such people, unless God gives special grace, a “convenient time” never comes, and they find themselves in hell.

A: I couldn't begin to count how many people I've dealt with who were just like Felix. I can't force anyone to repent and be saved, I can only do as Paul did and speak the truth in love. The Holy Spirit is the One who convicts of sin, righteousness and judgment, so I need to pray for His active work in these people's hearts. At the same time, I need to pray for courage for them to respond rightly to the conviction they feel. Felix was feeling convicted, but he ran from it. I need to be careful that my words are always spoken in love and not condemnation, because far more people are loved into the kingdom than scared into it.

P: Father, so many people come to mind as I think about this issue. I ask for grace to love them and the anointing of Your Spirit to open their eyes to see themselves and see You. This applies even to my own children, who seem all too blinded by the culture in which they live. Help us all see ourselves and see You better, giving all we know of ourselves to all we know of You, so that nothing will hinder the flow of Your grace through us, for Your glory. Thank You. Praise God!
