The choice of life or death is offered by God to every human being, and the choice is genuinely ours. God is sadder than any human could be that so many choose death, most often by default because they fail to choose life. In this passage the focus is on benefit to the individual and to their descendants, whereas in Japan many choose death because they feel choosing life would be disloyal to their ancestors, who are already dead. The irony there is immense, but they don't see it. In Jesus' story of Lazarus the beggar, the rich man who went to hell didn't want anyone to join him there. The devil likes to perpetuate the lie that the dead depend on the living, binding people in all sorts of rituals to venerate the dead. Fortunately, not long ago the Pope officially denounced the teaching of purgatory as extra-biblical and not to be done. Whether it be Buddhist, Confucian, or “Christian,” (or any number of other religions), such teaching is a lie intended to blind people from the choice of life that God offers them. As Moses said, truly the Lord is our life, and we need to choose Him in obedience and love.

This is, of course, the choice that I offer to people, and to this point the number of people who have chosen life has been sadly few. However, I feel like the Lord is giving me more tools to use (such as the tract I just wrote on “Where are you going?”and the one on “Guilt and Forgiveness” that He's growing within me), and I know that His Spirit is working. I must not allow the devil to distract me from the task, particularly by making me focus on negative things, but rather lift my eyes in expectation to the fields that are white for harvest, so that all who are prepared may be brought in. God has indeed prepared many to receive the message, and I've got to get it out to them in ways they can receive it, so that none of the harvest may be lost.

Father, thank You for what You are doing. Thank You that we could distribute 500 fliers this week. I pray that each one would bear the fruit You intend, for a rich harvest indeed. Thank You for the suggestions/corrections that were made for the text of the “Where are you going?” tract, so that it will be even more effective from the next printing. Thank You that I could print the newsletters for the Baptist church to use in evangelistic outreach. I pray that they too would be effective in bringing people into Your kingdom. Help me have Your priorities, and recognize them when they are presented to me, so that I may be fully useful to You in helping people choose life, for their salvation and Your glory. Thank You. Praise God

There is a small but significant difference between the English and the Japanese in this verse. The NIV says if you return to the Lord, and the Japanese says because you return to the Lord. Perhaps the Japanese is a more comforting prophecy! In either case, it is clear that our actions have consequences, either for good or bad. The NT focus on grace has made a lot of Christians forget the equally NT concept of sowing and reaping. (Galatians 6:7) What Moses is saying here is that even if we mess up royally, if we will repent and return to God He will graciously receive us. That's good news any way you look at it! It takes God's help to keep us on track, as Moses was saying in verse 6, but it also requires our cooperation. We can't act like spoiled brats and expect God to excuse our disobedience, but we can recognize our sin and confess it to Him, and He will cleanse and restore us. (1 John 1:9).

Just as I have to remember and apply this in my own life, I am also charged with communicating it to others. The difficulty I find is that the vast majority of people don't want to acknowledge their sin, or that they are in the wrong before God. Sadly, that applies to many Christians as well as to non-Christians. Then, those who have done something that they cannot pretend was not sin, have great difficulty believing and accepting God's forgiveness. When there is so little understanding of forgiveness, it's no wonder there is great reluctance to acknowledge wrongs. (This extends to the business world as well, with companies covering up their mistakes instead of correcting them.) God is the God of grace, but His laws don't bend! I need the help of the Holy Spirit to communicate both sides of that.

Father, thank You for the sharp focus You are giving me on the problem of evangelism in Japan. Thank You for the tract You recently enabled me to write, and that we are getting it out to people. I pray that it would be effective in opening many eyes. Thank you for the idea You gave me for another tract on guilt and forgiveness. Guide me in writing that as well. I ask for Your anointing, inspiration and guidance in communicating the good news of Christ Jesus to the Japanese people, so that there may be a massive harvest for Your glory. Thank You. Hallelujah!

An untested faith isn't worth much, frankly. That's why Paul cautions Timothy not to put people in positions of leadership before they have some maturity in their faith. A new Christian can seem all on fire one day and almost cold the next, because their faith doesn't have tested roots. God isn't being mean to us when He tests our faith, He's wanting us to plant our roots deeper and deeper in Him and His Word, so that no amount of storms can shake us from our place in Him. Storms can certainly shake our branches, so to speak, and even break off a few, but God intends that as pruning and cleaning, so that we will be more secure and more fruitful, putting our energy where it needs to go instead of being distracted. God doesn't want us agonizing over whether we're really saved or not; He wants us to be clear as to whom we serve and why, so that we won't be vulnerable to the tricks and traps of the enemy of our souls.

I have not always been the best judge of spiritual maturity, but I have to leave the past in God's hands. Someone recently described me as “kuso majime,” which means essentially, “so well-behaved as to be no good.” The expression shows a sad misunderstanding of what is good, as well as of joy and happiness. I need to encourage the believers that the storms they experience are to strengthen them, not tear them down. I need to pray for those who are going through testing that they will not fall away, just as Jesus prayed for Peter, but I also need to have discernment and wisdom in assigning responsibilities, so that weak branches won't break under the load.

Father, thank You for all the testing You've put me through, and for what I'm experiencing even right now. Thank You for teaching me to trust You, even though it's sometimes been quite painful in the process. Thank You for teaching me that I can't trust myself apart from You, so that my pride is less likely to lead me astray. Help me relate to myself and to those around me as You intend, strengthening the weak and admonishing the unruly, so that together we may grow and move as You intend, for Your glory. Thank You. Praise God!

Moses could really not have been more clear. The amazing thing about it all is the selective memory of the Israelites after this. They had the clear, written record that Moses left for them (I think the book of Deuteronomy is a manuscript that he wrote and then read to the assembled elders of the people), but they chose to remember only the blessings, and complain when they didn't get them, instead of the curses, which they busily brought on themselves. You could use the illiteracy of the majority at this point as an excuse, if it weren't for the fact that people down through the centuries have behaved in exactly the same way, and still do today. We love to recount the promises of God, but we like to avoid the negative ones that speak of the consequences of failing to obey God. We want to treat God like a vending machine instead of as our holy, living Lord. As Peter points out in 2 Peter 3:8-9, it is only because of God's incredible patience and love that He hasn't squashed us yet! This is why it is so utterly important to fear God rightly, to understand that we are utterly dependent on His grace and mercy, which are indeed abundant but must not be taken lightly.

I have to deal with this in my own life, but I also need to communicate it to those around me, and particularly to the believers. On the basis of culture alone, Japanese should be able to understand this more easily than Americans, because of Shinto being essentially a system of placating the gods or spirits. However, Shinto is a matter of “if you fail to do this you'll get whacked,” and there is no overarching moral imperative. Such thinking is rightly understood as superstitious, and thinking people do their best to reject it. However, without the moral imperative, people fail to understand the righteous requirements of Creator God, or even that there is such a God, much less that He has righteous requirements. That shows how big my task is, but with God nothing is impossible. I cannot do it in my own strength and wisdom, so I must constantly submit myself to the Holy Spirit so that He can convict people of sin, righteousness and judgment as Jesus said He would (John 16:8-11).

Father, thank You for Your Word that is so clear. Those who refuse to read it, insisting that it is too difficult, do so only because they have no intention of obeying it. Help me not be discouraged by such people, but rather walk in submission and obedience to You myself. Help me speak Your message clearly, in love. May Your truth be inescapable for all who hear, so that they may know Your truth and be set free from the traps of the devil. May we all rejoice in Your gracious promises but not ignore Your righteous requirements, so that we will walk in all the abundance You intend for us, for Your glory. Thank You. Hallelujah!

Hearsay is all well and good, but nothing can beat personal experience. Hearsay evidence is not admissible in a court of law, and it's not much of a foundation for faith, either. Moses' big concern was that the generation that had seen what he had experienced of God was about to die, just as he was, and he wanted to do all he could to ensure the transmittal of faith to the next generation. They in turn experienced the crossing of the Jordan, the conquest of Jericho, and many other things, but Moses could only trust that such things would happen. The experiences of past generations are important, encouraging and inspiring, but we need to look for and recognize God's hand in our own lives. If our attitude is simply one of enduring, we will recognize little if any of what God is doing, except perhaps in retrospect. If our hearts are open and expectant toward God, we will see Him working in even the smallest details of our lives, and our faith will grow accordingly. We need to share such things with those who have ears to listen, so that they too will be encouraged to expect God to work in their lives.

This is a big issue with me. We have testimony time in every church service for precisely this reason. When people's hearts are closed, they often hear such testimonies as bragging. My desire and my task is to help them see God's hand in their own lives and know that He loves them just as much as He loves anyone else. Such recognition is giving God the glory He deserves. It is particularly important for parents to speak of such things in front of their children, whether or not they are speaking directly to their children, because if that happens, the children will grow up with the awareness of God who cares about and cares for them, and a vital, personal relationship with Christ will come easily. I must encourage all the parents in the church to do this with their children.

Father, I've not been terribly good about living out the truth I've known. Forgive me. Help me indeed to live out the Word You've planted in me, giving You glory by my testimony and my obedience, so that all Your plans for me may be fulfilled as You desire and intend. Thank You. Hallelujah!

In either Japanese or English, this imagery is a bit jarring because of the cultural context, or perhaps lack of it, but Paul picks up on this same imagery in Romans. It is especially meaningful for Jewish people because circumcision was and is one of the things that has set them apart from other nations over the centuries. A person can function without being circumcised, and obviously many do. But after circumcision a man is more sensitive and vulnerable, and current evidence is that his partner has less risk of various diseases. I think the things Moses and Paul were talking about were first of all the permanent marking, as someone belonging to God, and second, sensitivity and openness toward God. Sometimes our insensitivity toward God can be amazing! He speaks to us in love, guiding and correcting and encouraging, yet we stubbornly refuse to listen. As comes out repeatedly in Deuteronomy, everything God tells us is for our good. Moses, and Paul, are telling us to get rid of anything that might get in the way of responding in love to God's love for us.

This wouldn't be an easy thing to preach on! However, the concept is an important one, and I need to communicate it effectively. I don't need to go explaining the details of circumcision to those who aren't familiar with it, but I do need to communicate the importance of getting rid of whatever hinders our hearing God and obeying Him. I need sensitivity toward God myself, in order to be effective in communicating His love and truth to others, so that they in turn may likewise hear and obey Him, for their blessing and His glory.

Father, at times my heart is calloused toward You. Forgive me. Help me be fully sensitive and receptive toward You, hearing Your still, small voice and responding with love, gratitude and obedience. Help me communicate the importance and blessedness of that, so that the people under my care may likewise avoid the traps of the devil and walk in the fullness of all You intend for us. May we be soft and pliable in Your hands so that You may mold us as You desire and intend, for our blessing and Your glory. Thank You. Praise God!

It can be downright amazing how easily we can forget this simple fact. We have reminders of it throughout Scripture, from Elisha asking God to open the eyes of his servant so that he could see the angelic forces that were protecting them (2 Kings 6:15-17) all the way to 1 John 4:4, in which we are assured that the Holy Spirit in us is greater than the devil who is in the world. The devil naturally does all he can to make us forget it, because lies are his only real weapon. When we know the truth and stand firm in it, the devil can't budge us! We are constantly faced with problems of one sort and another. Some of them we are involved in dealing with, but many of them we aren't. The devil wants to steal our peace and joy by getting us worked up over the ones we aren't to be involved with, and he wants to convince us that we don't have the answers to the ones we are involved with, but all of that is a crock of lies. When we turn our hearts and minds to God, remembering both His power and His love, then we are filled with peace and joy as we wait in hope for His solutions to everything we face.

This is something I have known on an intellectual level for a long time, but it is still being worked into me on an emotional level. I am still all too prone to focus on the problem instead of on God who is the solution. I've got to be yielded to God in every way, not relying on the gifts He's placed in me but on God Himself, allowing His Spirit to guide me into His answer for every question. I've got to get out of the mindset that I've got to fix anything. Rather, I've got to be fully submitted to allow God to use me however He wants to in bringing about His solution.

Father, thank You for the progress I've made recently in this area. Help me share with others the grace I myself have received, and help me continue to grow. Help me indeed rest and rejoice in You, today and each day, fearing nothing because I know You, Your power and Your love. Thank You. Praise God!
