O: Probably God's grace and gifting take as many forms as there are people, which is why we often run into problems when we try to formulate rules for service. However, one principle shines clear: God's gifts are to be used for service; they aren't just for the benefit of the immediate recipient. We overlook this principle to our peril, because when we get self-centered in relation to God's gifts we completely miss His purposes is giving them, and everyone loses their benefit. God's gifts indeed bless the immediate recipients, but if we fail to see that they are to be used in service to God through serving others, we fail to receive the true benefit and the Body of Christ is not built up. Some gifts, such as hospitality, prophecy, and giving, are obviously outwardly directed, but some, such as tongues, are less so. The use of tongues does build up the speaker, as both Paul and Jude say clearly, but if we only speak in tongues to make us feel good and/or important, we've missed the boat. Tongues are to empower us as intercessors, enabling us to pray for situations in which we don't know the details, much less what God's intended outcome might be. They are to be used faithfully and intentionally with the purpose of building up the Body of Christ and establishing the Kingdom of God.
A: I have been disturbed to hear of other churches that stress spiritual gifts, and particularly tongues, without teaching the believers how to apply those gifts to build up the Body of Christ. I must not make that same mistake! If I will be faithful and clear in teaching, then the believers will desire and exercise spiritual gifts and the Body of Christ will be built up. Service within the Body is not an option for Christians; the only variable is the form that service will take. I need to help each believer understand how their gifts can benefit the whole Body, and encourage them in the exercise of those gifts.

P: Father, thank You for the generosity of Your gifts. Help me be faithful in exercising those You have placed in me, so that I will in turn help others recognize and exercise the gifts You have placed in them, so that together we may build up the Body of Christ, for Your glory. Thank You. Hallelujah!

O: Here we have it: the fundamental methodology of personal evangelism. It must be based on a personal relationship to Jesus Christ as Lord, which is to say, it's not something to do because other people expect it of you. It's got to come out of an awareness of the grace of God to you personally, or it will come across as empty and/or manipulative. If we have such a relationship, such an awareness, then our lives will bubble over with hope, with peace and joy in the middle of whatever circumstances we find ourselves in, and that is enormously attractive, especially to those who are hungering for such hope, peace and joy. It is at this point that preparation comes in. When someone asks us why we always have a smile on our face, we need to be able to tell them more than “I feel good.” Canned Gospel presentations aren't the best thing, for sure, but they are better than nothing. What is most effective, and satisfying, is simply sharing what God has done for us in Christ. That requires familiarity with Scripture, but it doesn't require memorizing long passages, but some key verses can be helpful. Above all, it calls for knowing what God has done for us, which will certainly multiply our hope, peace and joy!

A: My job as a pastor/teacher is to prepare and equip the believers so that they will both know and be able to share what God has done for them in Christ. I preach week by week, but I also need to provide specific, focused teaching. The devotional readings from the 12th are a good start, because they deal with what we have in Christ, but I need to help the people see what is really there. I often fail to cover the basics thoroughly enough simply because they are so familiar to me, forgetting that they aren't so familiar to others who haven't had the same upbringing I have.

P: Father, thank You for making the focus of Sunday morning's message clear. Keep me from coming across as hounding the believers. Help me rather open their eyes to the glorious riches of Your grace, so that they won't be able to stop talking about it out of sheer joy. I obviously can't do that in my own wisdom and power; use me, speak through me to touch the heart of each hearer. May we, as individuals and as a body, be so aware of Your love and grace toward us that we will radiate hope, peace, joy and love to one another and to all around us, not allowing the devil to steal any of that but living as You intend, for the salvation of many and for Your glory. Thank You. Hallelujah!

O: Respect is a major issue in marriage. Peter mentions it here, and Paul talks about it from the other direction in Ephesians 5. Many marriages start out with what the couple (or at least one of them) thinks is love, but then break down because of a lack of respect. Love without respect is never more than eros, satisfying your own desires. The irony of that is that those very desires are far better satisfied when there is respect, opening the way for storge, phileo, and agape. Marriage and family are certainly under attack today, seemingly as never before, and it is because the devil knows that the relationship between husband and wife is to be a picture of the relationship between Christ and the Church, and he hates it to the core of his being. We are all called to be vigilant in defense of marriage and family, and that of course starts with our own marriages and families. A home without respect is not a home, it's a battleground. Respect isn't about being right or wrong, it's about valuing and cherishing, supporting and protecting. Sometimes respect requires correction, but correction with respect is far different from correction without it!

A: Cathy and I both have the huge advantage of being raised in homes where the couple respected each other and taught their children to respect others. However, many people we deal with haven't had that advantage. We need to continue to model family respect and make use of each opportunity the Lord provides to speak to that issue for others. However, we've got to be very careful not to come across as condemnatory or superior, because that will not be taken as respect by our hearers. The need for respect is fundamental, and some people feel so deprived of it that they are hyper sensitive. Speaking the truth in love (agape) is vital, because as Paul pointed out, love never harms another.

P: Father, once again I come up against my own weakness. Without Your help I can't relate to everyone with the respect and love shown by Jesus. However, I know that if I will stay connected and submitted to Him, Your love will flow through me in unlimited measure. That is what I desire and what I ask. Thank You for last night, that went a long way toward removing prejudices among Japanese, Korean, and American Christians, reminding us all that we are indeed brothers and sisters, since we are Your children. I do pray that all of Your purposes for that meeting and for the connections that were established may be fulfilled, building up the Body of Christ for Your glory. Thank You. Hallelujah!

O: I don't know how it is in the Greek, but the Japanese loses a little of the imagery that is evident in the English, because the term used in verse 3 doesn't apply to flavor, the way “good” does in English. The picture is actually a very clear one for anyone who has ever been around a small child. They are incapable of chewing, but they can kneed a nipple with their gums, and when they're hungry, that's what they want to do! There's no such thing as an infant that turns it's nose up at its mother's milk; it is the definition of “delicious” to them. In the same way, every true Christian has experienced receiving the Word of the Lord when it seemed almost too good to be true: it met their deepest need, and was “delicious” in every sense of the word. Unfortunately, sometimes we think we're beyond that, and we forget how delicious God's Word is if we will receive it into our hearts. As Hebrews points out, maturity calls for chewing on the harder stuff as well, but we must not forget the delight of letting the Lord refresh us with His Word.

A: One of my strong desires for the flock is that they delight in taking in the Word, drinking and eating and digesting and assimilating it so that they grow strong indeed. Naturally I desire that they receive what I prepare and serve them, but even more I want them to learn to take the Word in on their own, becoming fully “addicted” to it, so that they can't stay away from it, any more than a little baby can stay away from its milk. Some believers seem to go through cycles in their devotional life, taking the Word in hungrily for a while but then getting busy with other things and letting it slide, until some crisis reminds them of the riches that are to be found in the Bible. I need to be more clear, more encouraging, and perhaps more directive in telling the believers, reminding them, about daily devotions. I say it often, but we can no more be healthy spiritually without Bible reading and prayer than we can be healthy physically without food and oxygen!

P: Father, it took me a long time to get into a really solid habit of daily devotions. Help me not condemn the believers who aren't there yet, but also keep me from giving up on them when they don't see the importance of it. I don't believe for a moment that You desire “1st tier” and “2nd tier” children; You want us all to have full intimacy with You. Help me communicate that reality, breaking down and getting past the lies of the devil that seek to hinder that intimacy. After all, nothing is more intimate than the relationship of a nursing infant to his mother. May I be so closely related to You that You are free to work through me in the hearts and lives of those I deal with, drawing them likewise into intimacy with You, for their salvation and Your glory. Thank You. Praise God!

O: In this culture, as in many others, the very act of saying that the way of life handed down from the ancestors is empty is a terrible affront. However, repentance is absolutely essential for salvation, and that means a turning from what you have been and turning to God. It is logically inescapable that what you have been is deficient, and in the case of most Japanese, that means what you were raised to be by generations of ancestors who didn't know God. It is irrelevant that ancestor worship is originally Confucian rather than Buddhist, when most Japanese consider themselves Buddhist; they are taught to revere their ancestors. Young people who meet Christ while away from home, studying overseas or even within Japan, face enormous pressure to conform when they go home. Refusal to burn incense at the family grave or altar is seen as a betrayal of the family. With Obon (the Japanese festival of the dead) coming up this month this problem is going to be acute for many young Christians, and many will choose not to go home for the holiday so they won't have to face it. That can be the wise choice, but the problem remains of communicating Christ to the other family members.

A: I have never had to face this issue personally, since I have the incredible blessing of being descended from generations of people who loved and were committed to Christ on both sides of my family. I therefore need an extra measure of sensitivity and wisdom in dealing with, encouraging and supporting those around me who are in the middle of it. And that isn't limited to young people! Demonic activity is at something of a peak, as many in this church are experiencing, and I need to help them stand in spiritual warfare. As with all trials, this is an opportunity for real growth, and I need to be available to the Lord to enable maximum growth.

P: Father, thank You for all You are doing. Thank You for the good day yesterday, despite our concerns. Thank You for the two good services, and for all that happened in between. Thank You for all You spoke through me. I pray that not a word of that would be lost, but that it would do its full work in the hearts and lives of those who heard. May we individually and collectively leave empty ways behind and move forward into the fullness You have for us in Christ, for Your glory. Thank You. Hallelujah!

O: Trials come in many, many different shapes, sizes, colors, etc. What is a major trial for one person is hardly noticed by another. God knows our weak points and our rough spots, and he allows only those trials that we can tolerate, and he tailors them to operate on the areas where we need the most work. If we can grasp that awareness and hang onto it, trials become much more bearable and we become able to rejoice in Christ indeed, even in the middle of the trials. One of the purposes in God allowing trials is to give us an appreciation for God's grace toward us. By rights, we deserve destruction! When we have the assurance that our trials will not be more than we can bear, then we can rejoice indeed.

A: I am in the middle of what I could call a complicated trial, but I prefer to think of it as another round of intensive training. It is interesting to have people pour out their “people problems” to you when you feel inundated by “people problems” yourself! The Lord has made it clear to me that I can't fix anyone's problems in my own strength and wisdom, even my own, so He is allowing reinforcement of that lesson so that I will learn to relax and rejoice, regardless of my circumstances. I have what seems like a mountain of responsibilities, but they are a mountain only if I view them that way. After all, Jesus said that with faith, we could command mountains to get out of the way! That's not to say that I'm to try to duck responsibility, but rather that I'm not to view it as a mountain. I need to let the Lord show me what I'm to take on and what to decline, and trust that His grace will be more than enough to get me through whatever I face.

P: Father, thank You for Your grace over the past several days. Thank You for attendance at events and for the ministry that has taken place. Thank You for enabling me to get the DVDs made yesterday, as well as the CDs. Thank You for all that today holds. Thank You for the messages You've given me, and for the assurance that You will speak through me as I deliver them. Thank You for each person who will be here today, morning, afternoon, and evening. Help me relate to each one with Your grace and love, just as You relate to me, regardless of their response. Help me focus on what is to be done now, rather than being anxious about future events and responsibilities. May You be glorified as Your will is done. Thank You. Praise God!

O: Again we have a Scripture that is so familiar as to have become almost a cliché, but the problem lies in the implementation. People may think they are submitted to God, when in fact their thoughts are anything but submitted. On the other side of that, people fail to recognize the wiles of the devil and accept his suggestions as their own thoughts, or accept them without thinking at all. As it says in Hosea 4:6, “My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge.” As is the context in Hosea, this puts a lot of responsibility on church leaders. If the leaders don't expose the lies of the devil so that the people are equipped to resist him, then the people are worse off than if they didn't have leaders, because then they might be more likely to seek the help and guidance of the Holy Spirit.

A: As a pastor/teacher, this hits very close to home with me. I try to be faithful in expressing the whole Word of the Lord to the people, but at times I get reaction and resentment, especially when I am touching on attitudes that aren't submitted to God. I can be as blind as the next person, so sometimes people pick up on my weaknesses and refuse to hear what I'm saying about theirs, never mind the relative severity of the problems. I can't wait until I'm perfect before I preach, or I could never preach. However, I must always preach and teach in humility, receiving for myself the words that come from my lips. I need to set the example of what it's like to submit to God and then, on that basis, resist the devil.

P: Father, thank You for this reminder. As always, my problem is in living out the truth that I already have in my head. Thank You for Your faithfulness to work on me in that area. Thank You for Your grace and blessing over the past couple of days, with the Gospel Music Workshop Thursday and then the mini-concert yesterday. Thank You for working out all the details. I knew you would, and yet I still stressed out in the process of it all. That's a lesson I should have learned by now! Thank You for Cathy's sensitivity to my stress level, even while her own stress level was high. Help me be equally sensitive to her, as the partner she needs and deserves. Thank You for the messages You've given me for tomorrow, and that they are prepared. Guide in all that happens today, so that as we submit to You and resist the devil, all of Your plans, and none of his, may be fulfilled, for Your glory. Thank You. Praise God!
