O: The Bible comes back to this point again and again, in books written by various people: we don't belong to the world. Everyone has an innate need to belong, but that is satisfied ultimately by belonging to God and His family. Anyone might be rejected by any group, even including their own family, but someone who has committed themselves to God will never be cast away. This too is repeated in many different places in the Bible. That's why hospitality is valued so highly, again throughout the Bible. Since we are “aliens and strangers” in this world, we should reach out to those who are similarly positioned in society. Verse two of this passages says we might find ourselves being hospitable to angels! When we value “belonging” to any earthly entity, be it a place, an organization, a nation or a race, over belonging to God, we miss a great deal of the good God has prepared and intends for us.

A: I am uniquely prepared to appreciate and express this point, having been raised bi-culturally and bi-lingually, never feeling fully accepted by either. Rather than being resentful of not belonging, I need to be thankful for how easy it is to value my citizenship in heaven! At the same time I need to be understanding but persistent toward those believers who still value earthly ties over eternal ones. It isn't easy to be consistent in choosing Jesus above everyone and everything else, so I need to encourage and empower, rather than condemn.

P: Father, thank You that I belong to You and Your family! Thank You that I can be secure in that, and that I do look forward to my eternal home with a growing longing. There is much about this earth that is beautiful and even glorious, but it can't begin to compare with what You have prepared for us. Help me be faithful for as long as You keep me here, being grateful for and even delighting in all You allow me to experience and enjoy, but never placing it ahead of You and what You have for me to do. Help me keep “listening to You with obedience” as my first priority, so that I will be fully prepared for all that You have prepared for me, for Your glory. Thank You. Hallelujah!
