O: It's important to realize that this comes immediately after a discussion of the dangers of having money as a goal. Plenty of people fall into that trap, but a Christian whose heart is right has a different set of values from the world. The world laughs at the very idea of having such things as are listed here as serious goals, but Paul says we are to seek them earnestly. That's because these fit in with what Jesus said about storing up treasure in heaven rather than on earth. These things are indeed treasures from the divine, eternal perspective, while physical wealth is certainly temporary, often not lasting even for as long as we are on this earth, as recent economic developments remind us.

A: I can't say that money per se has never been much of a goal for me, and that's probably a real blessing, but it is certainly useful on this earth, and we are commanded to steward it wisely. The lack of money is sometimes a source of real stress, but there too I need to focus on God's kingdom and His righteousness, as Jesus put it, so that I will be lined up with the flow of God's provision. I do find myself desiring things at times, but the Lord is growing me in that area as well, and I am finding that “godliness with contentment is great gain” (verse 6) indeed. Right now the church faces the very big financial need of the funds to purchase the land our building stands on, but there too, God is the source, and our focus needs to be on Him.

P: Father, thank You for Your abundant provision. Thank You for supplying so that Cathy and I will be able to attend the meeting in September and then go to my 40th college reunion in October. Thank You that You know what we need better than we do, and that You can be trusted to supply. Thank You that is true of the things Paul tells us to seek earnestly as well. Help me indeed grow in righteousness, godliness, faith, love, patient endurance, and gentleness, so that I will be rich as You want me to be, as you count riches, for Your glory. Thank You. Praise God!
