O: This whole passage is absolutely loaded with good stuff, but for some reason this verse really caught my attention. It's a very practical admonition, and the imagery used is fairly common: that of being in a body of water that has a strong current, either a river or a tide. We speak of “go with the flow,” meaning to go along with whatever is happening around us, but this verse points out how dangerous that can be. We are to go with the flow of the Holy Spirit, but not with the flow of society when that flow ignores or goes against God. The point is that we all run the risk of being carried away from obedience to God, because the various currents around us can be quite strong at times. We can't get out of the water, figuratively speaking, so we've got to get God's help in standing firm against against those wrong currents. When Jesus prayed for His disciples just before the cross he said, “My prayer is not that you take them out of the world but that you protect them from the evil one.” (John 17:15) We need to seek that protection at all times so that we won't be carried away by the world.

A: Societal pressures are something everyone in every culture has to deal with, and learning to stay true to God and true to yourself in the middle of those pressures is a big part of growing to maturity. The big problem comes when we don't recognize those pressures for what they are. My job as a pastor is to help the believers recognize what is of God and what isn't, and encourage them to make the right choices. That's not to say that rampant individualism, a la America, is good either. I need to teach them to love God first and then love their neighbor, but also what love is, so that they won't confuse it with doing whatever their neighbor expects them to do.

P: Father, this is a big issue, especially in Japan, where “going against the flow” has been seen as reprehensible. People sometimes resent it when I insist that they need to do so, but it's not me, it's You! Help me always speak the truth in love, under the direction of Your Spirit, whether it generates resentment or not. There have been times when I have almost desperately wanted to be part of the flow, the “in crowd,” but by Your grace You have kept me from that. Even so, I have accepted ungodly influence all too often. Help me live out all the truth You have placed in me, and flow with Your Holy Spirit alone, for the blessing of many and for Your glory. Thank You. Praise God!
