O: I have written on this verse before because I am so struck by the way the NIV puts it, but the Japanese is also quite interesting, though distinctly different. I've dealt with translation enough to know that both are probably quite defensible! The NIV says that sharing our faith results in better understanding of the good things we have in Christ, while the Japanese says that knowing all the good things that are being done for Christ will strengthen the fellowship of our faith. Both are desirable outcomes! Either way, it is important both to know and to share. True Christianity is communicative! That's why Islamic countries try to put it into isolation, and North Korea regularly executes people for communicating the Gospel. That's hard to imagine for people who live in countries with true religious freedom, but it is a sign of the power of the Gospel that the number of believers is growing, even in North Korea. The Gospel is in a sense information, knowledge of God's love and what it means to us, but it is never merely abstract; to save, it's got to be grasped, internalized, and acted on.

A: I am in the business of communcating the Gospel, to non-believers in basic form and to believers in all its richness. I know from experience that communicating it gives me better understanding of the richness of the Gospel, and that the more I know of how rich it is, the better I can communicate it. I must never draw back from either side of that, pressing in to know more and reaching out to more and more people. It is certainly too wonderful to keep quiet about it! Likewise, I need to equip and encourage the believers to be effective in their knowledge and communication of the Gospel, so that all of God's plans for us may be fulfilled.

P: Father, thank You for all You are doing here. At times it seems chaotic, but you have it all under control. Help me be fully yielded to You, refusing to be anxious about anything but actively trusting and obeying You. The devil does all he can to try to mess things up. Help me resist him wisely and firmly, on the basis of my submission to You, so that all of Your plans, and none of his, may be fulfilled in and among us, for Your glory. Thank You. Hallelujah!
