O: This passage is often used to encourage use of spiritual gifts, but the impression from the Japanese at any rate is that what needs to be fanned into flame is the gift of the Holy Spirit Himself. American Pentecostal/Charismatic churches, at any rate, tend to focus on the gifts the Holy Spirit imparts, and all too often it seems they have forgotten Who gives the gifts and certainly why He gives them. Reading this as applying to the Holy Spirit Himself would certainly agree with Paul's admonition not to quench the Holy Spirit (1 Thessalonians 5:19). When we are aflame with the Spirit, not only will His gifts be operating in and through us, He will be burning out of us those things that are not pleasing to the Father. That is in keeping with His character: not timidity, but power, love, and self-discipline. When we focus too strongly on any of the gifts, such as tongues or prophecy or healings or miracles, we have a tendency to forget whose gifts and power they are. When we are focused on Christ and eager for His Spirit, then we will be open for whatever He wants to do in and through us.

A: I have certainly had my high and low times in terms of the Holy Spirit myself, so I need to take Paul's admonition here very seriously. I have thought at times of how different gifts have been manifested more at some times than at others, particularly prophecy, but my focus should not be on “I should prophesy” (as the Lord's Cross group tends to do), but on “Lord, fill me and use me.” That needs to be the focus of my teaching as well. I need to teach people about spiritual gifts and encourage the expectation of their operation, but the main point is simply to be filled with, flowing with, the Holy Spirit. When He is free to operate in our hearts and lives, all sorts of things get corrected because we are put in line with the Father's will. Jesus talked a lot about the Holy Spirit in the Upper Room Discourse (John 13-17), saying that the Holy Spirit would teach us all things and remind us of all that Jesus said (John 14:26), taking what is Jesus' and revealing it to us (John 16:14-15). I need to strive personally and for this church to be constantly and increasingly filled and flowing with the Holy Spirit, not for any particular gifts but for all that God wants to pour through us for His glory.

P: Father, thank You for making this so clear to me this morning. Help me indeed be constantly and increasingly filled and flowing with Your Spirit. Thank You for what You did through Cathy and me in counseling that couple yesterday. As I told him, when we think “I've got to (or even "I can") do something,” we risk moving from the gifts of the Holy Spirit into witchcraft. The focus has got to be on You and not on us, but at the same time we've got to be yielded, submitted, and available to You for whatever You want to do through us. Father, that's hard to keep straight, and I've seen many instances of people getting it wrong. I have no wisdom or strength to stay on track myself, but I have Your promise to guide and protect me. Help me keep my commitment and my obedience strong and fresh, for Your glory. Thank You. Hallelujah!
